: ...What you ask for depends on a number of factors.... If the book is likely to hit either a bestseller list or, better still, be picked up and put on the library lists, you need to ask for something up front to cover your expenses while you actually write the damn' thing - but, more importantly, a residual derived from the royalty.

If it is not likely to be the sort of thing that is going to fly - you need to ask for more substantial one off payment - say something up front and balance on completion - possibly asling for a tiny residual just to show faith.

As to what monetary values you put on these.... It depends on how much time and effort you put into the project. If it's going to be carrying you full time for three months, then certainly ask for payment commensurate with three months average income. 'Authors' have to realise that a ghost has to be paid a living wage, as it were. If they pay peanuts, they'll get a product written by a peanut consumer.

Put it this way - in the UK, if I was going to spend 3 months ghosting, I'd ask for £10,000, paid £4,000 up front and £6,000 on completion. I'd also ask for a 1% residual on sales - but I'd be prepared to forget the residual.
