new x-men is fairly close to the original story, so it will give you a base knowalage for X-men...now Ultimate is cool, but follows a different story, as does all Ultimate titles, so you have to keep it straight in your mind that ultimate x-men and x-men are 2 different things, from 2 different parralel universes.(like the story with spidy where he was brought to a different dimension with the all the other spidy's, all of them were different, but all of em were spidy, remember)
But if you just want some great reading every week, go with Uncanny or just with regular ol' x-men...you'll have to do some research to understand some things with these one's as they are the oldeast running books.
