A film that is put together well should be seemless in at least some respects. Rayguns belonged in StarWars. If you were watching Endless Love and a cop had a raygun in his holster, well.. it would just be ridiculous in that context.
The context of a warden who is all over his prisoners does not leave room for the absultely absurd idea that prisoners could build a giant catapult right under his nose.
As I implied (I think) I am all for suspension of disbelief. but that doesn't effectively apply here.
