I agree with your points - but also - could the movie have been any more miscast? I'm sorry, but Gandolfini is not believable at all in that role. This could be because I am used to him playing mobsters and/or thugs - but as someone with any military background..he just doesn't fit the part.
And Redford, whom I adore..well..they made him too much of a martyr.
I think I only liked Delroy Lindo in this movie.
