: When you sit down to work on whatever it is you're writing, be it a script, novel, short story, etc. Do you just sit down with a vague idea of what you want in mind and start writing, or do you make an outline and work from there? Just curious.

~~I usually start from just a vague notion - which can come from anywhere - inspiration is all around (e.g. I've just finished a short story of 13,000 words - which is going in the next book - which as inspired by a chance remark from my significant other). I tend to use the 'what if' principle... For my second novel it was 'what would happen if a descendant of the Duke of Monmouth tried to claim the throne of modern day England?' - I set up the main protagonist characters then basically let them get on with it. The action plays out on the movie screen in my mind and I write it down.

OK, I'm odd.
