The Jesus theory is kinda right. They said in the commentary Donnie is a spiritual chosen one, religious or fate, doesn't say who chose him, but he is on a quest, Frank is his guide or whatever.
Donnie's mom sharing a moment with Gretchen is really anything, I guess it's supposed to be the kinda thing, where you feel like someone has done something great, but you don't know what. I dunno, at the end they have no idea about anything that happened in the rest of the movie (tangent universe)
