The only new laws in Michigan is that they've hopped on the online filing bandwagon. It's not really "harder" to file, but it's become more of an anti-pro se system, because now you have to hire someone to do it for you.

However, since Chapter 7 is specifically designed to liquidate your assets and redistribute it to your creditors, and your assets are in your girlfriend's name... yeah, that might cause some problems if the Court finds out, because they tend to frown upon fraud.

But other than that, no, I don't think there are any new laws that make it "harder" to file. In fact, this is how antiquated bankruptcy laws are - as long as your exemptions are less than 2 cows, 100 hens, 10 sheep, 5 pigs and enough grain for 6 months, you'll be fine.
