: You are correct in that people will always have disagreements on certain aspects of their shared faith and not all people will see completely eye to eye on every single issue.

: But, you CAN find a religion that is more in line with your personal beliefs. I come across Catholics all the time who will drone on about how pro-choice, pro-meat on Fridays, pro-homosexual rights, etc., then in the very next breath go, "And, of course, I'm Catholic".

I can answer that cause I am guilty of that. Simply put ther are many other aspects of catholocism that I hold true and dear. They may conflict with the ones you have stated but I can't find a religion that doesnt have conflicts. Basicaly I find my religion as a moral blueprint.
Whne the plans conflict (ie pro-homosexual rights and love thy nieghbor) I look to the other parts of the religion to clarify or tie break. In that example I find that god loves all his creations and 1 line of scripture thatmay be interperted as anti homosexual is greatly outnumbered by the rest of the scipture. Basicaly I say I am catholic but its all just a long aseopes fables to me and anyone older than 4 should be able to take what they can from it.

: And I wonder: whats keeping them in the religion? They disagree on all the major plot points. What, you can't find another religion that ALSO has the Ten Commandments?

They arnt the major plot points they are just the biggest ones of contention so they seem that way.

: Their out there - faiths and belief systems that are more in tune with your own personal beliefs. You don't have to be hypocritical.

They are all hypocritical to someone.

: (And, don't take that personally... when I say "you", I don't mean, like, YOU).

I get what you mean and hope I kinda made sense

: : : ... your Protestant.

: : : 'Cause, like, what you described - thats it.

: : : I love when Catholics say their Catholics, but then disavow the majority of the stances their religion dictates. Why don't you just convert to a different religion, one that is more in line with your true beliefs?

: : whose to say what's in line with anyone's true beliefs? certianly not you nor i.

: : : Doesn't necessarily have to be Protestantism (I was kinda joking about that)... but why this fear of searching out a religion that truly fits you, as opposed to one that you were simply brought up as?

: : I think that with any religion that there's going to be things you disagree with, and i mean it sounds stupid but it's true... theres a saying, "if two people have the same opinion then one isn't needed" and it's right if you look at it correctly... you can agree on somethings but no one has the same opinions or beliefs as everyone else, which is why i feel their's a weak point in religions of today.

: : : : The important thing about Catholicism is not to take it too seriously. That might make me seem contradictory or something, but when you're raised Catholic and you kind of decide you're sticking with it, you've got to realize that a lot of stuff is bullshit. The world's fucking old, most of the Bible is composed of "uplifting stories and parables," probably not hardcore fact. These kinds of views get dangerous when they are opposed by the ignorant and fearful. Tradition really is a harmful thing. Obviously eating meat on Fridays during Lent is a lesser offense than murder, and only the traditional higher-ups (and probably pious old people) would claim that there is even some comparison. Religious affiliation shouldn't rule one's life, I'm Catholic but pro-choice, death penalty, whatever. I'm not scared of not being "Catholic enough," and I'm not threatened by the dogma (sorry, I had to throw some kind of View Askew reference to justify my posting). I'm just afraid of what "complete devotion" could do to me. I don't want anything conflicting with my ability to reason and justify. I haven't been to church in about a couple months, haven't read the Bible since Confirmation and I don't really like praying. But leave me alone, I'm a Catholic, liberal and contemporary, but not just a name only one.
