: I'm new to this ftp stuff and i was hoping someone could explain to me how it works, and if smartftp puts my computer at risk for hackers etc... this might sound stupid but i need some help figuring how to connect to them... ( i don't plann on making my own just connecting to some to download some stuff ) thanks any help would be great.

An FTP client is like a web browser for FTP servers.

There is no more of a security risk if you are running an FTP client then if you have a web browser. Basically, you want to find the FTP address of the server you connect to, as well as a username/password. (sometimes, its anonymous FTP and doesn't require a password) You enter the address, username, and password and connect.

The specifics for how to do that differ with each FTP client, so if it isn't obvious, check the Help files.
