Like I said about the characters, if you've seen films like "Friday the 13th" or other such films, this movie was giving a nod to them. Think of it as "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" where we know the past & now we're having fun with them. This film doesn't really care about the characters, but just has fun with them. How many horror films have you seen where the nice girl survives in the end? Well in this one, she's the first to go. They basically have the a-hole of the group just about be the last to survive. The movie just has fun with things.
As for the virus explanation, there didn't really need to be. We see how it starts, but not where it comes from. Sort of like "Night of the Living Dead". Sometimes it's more fun to have a bit of mystery to things.
The film's not for everyone, but I think if you know horror flicks, then it should be okay.
