In fact, two of my friends from highschool did it. They actually dated each others friends and still hang out with them. We all left for college and they decided to stay here and do jr. college. While we were gone, they hooked up. That was in 1993- They just celebrated the 6th anniversary. They got married 3 months before me and he was our best man.
So it's not that it doesn't work, it just depends on who you are meant to be with.
