At the end of the day, it tends to boil down to how strong a character you are... I got appallingly depressed after an accident when I injured my spine and wrecked my left shoulder - I thought I was going to end up permanently wheelchair bound. I clawed my way out of that one by sheer willpower - I managed that alone. I've got some pretty awful difficulties in my personal life at the moment and have caught myself tending to descend into that ever downward spiral. However, I have the love of a very strong woman to support me, and this makes a whole world of difference - sharing really is unburdening.
If you ever find yourself heading in that direction again, for goodness sake, talk to someone. If it's easier to talk impersonally to a stranger, you can always email me. I'm very free with my advice (ha!) and, if nothing else, I can probably make you smile.
