Nah I think they actually thought that they were the best directors and would do interesting things with the script. The idea that they would pick them just to make the tv show more contentious is overly cynical.
I mean there is a lot of money ridding on this and I can't believe they would do anything like that which, if it causes the movies to suck, could have a very negative impact on the other people involved in making the movie, especially the actors.
