You're right, it was only done because their rights to it were about to run out. The Thing looks like a retarded Ninja Turtle made out of Cracker Jacks... and the guy who played Dr. Doom thought that his voice would be dubbed over, so he acted really dramatically with his hands and arms... except he wasn't dubbed over. It sounds like Darth Helmet from Spaceballs.
