: The thing that made T2 so good, was the father son dynamic with John and the Machine. Why not just have the terminator sent back in 3 have been up to date so their relationship could further, rather than being an all new one. The whole point in 3 is for John Connor to accept his fate as a leader, so it would have made more sense for his "father" to have come back for more advice. The other thing, while the new girl terminator isn't bad to look at, I think it would have been more interesting to have another Arnold sent back. One good Arnold, one bad. More Arnold as the terminator is good.

The Terminator that was sent back in #3 (Ah-nuld) was a T-800 sent to kill John Connor in the future (which it did). It was sent as a cheap trick because that was the model Connor knew as his 'father' in part 2. The machines (in the future) were playing to his emotions & it worked. Connor was killed, BUT the T-800 was captured & reprogrammed by the good guys. This was the one that was sent back to protect John Connor of the present also because of his connection to the one in part 2.

: The one thing I don't understand is, why can't weapons be passed through the time portal. Reese mentions this in the first one, but weapons are just machines, and the terminator IS a machine. Anywho, just felt like sharing my two cents.

Only living tissue can be passed through the time portal. Terminators are machines, yes, but are surrounded by living tissue. This is how they come back in time.
