True, Empire Strikes Back is better because he butted out, but he created an entire universe from his head, which should be applauded if nothing else. Oh wait, on top of being smart enough to get all the merchandising rights.
As for Spielberg directing, he's not exactly untouchable himself (Look at the average Minority Report, not to mention 1941). It's like saying penguins don't fly so let's trying sticking some wings on a trout. Spielberg and Lucas are on different sides of the divide (The obvious exception being Indian Jones, and even they had two clear jons- Lucas pays out money, Spielberg directs).
