: THE VIRGIN SUICIDES was excellently done, but she hasn't built up a career yet, so we can't put her on a level with these guys. I am really interested to see what she does next, though.
: She did manage the admirable trick of translating that book to screen without losing any of the original vibe -- even though in the book it's very important that the story is told from a male perspective and that it be set in the '50's.
: Coppola put her own imprint on it by flipping it to the 70's (GREAT soundtrack, too) and enhancing the female characters...usually liberties like that bother me (as in, say, "The Rules of Attraction", where they change the entire point & message of the book), but she did it with style.

: : : Are there no great female directors in Hollywood? Seriously. I don't know.
: : : : Mel Brooks?
: : : History of the World, Part I.
: : : : Brian DiPalma?
: : : I don't much care for his stuff. But "Femme Fatale" was very stylish.
: : : : Robert Zemeckis?
: : : Back to the Future
: : : : Steven Speilberg?
: : : Ugh. The Color Purple, I suppose.
: : : : Tim Burton?
: : : The Nightmare Before Christmas. Nobody recognizes that movie, man, and it is a work of patient genius.
: : : : Francis Ford Coppola? (gee...)
: : : Apocolypse Now, Redux version.
: : : : Oliver Stone?
: : : Tough. I'm really love/hate about Oliver. All his stuff is well done, but he's just so frickin' misogynistic and historically inaccurate, he inserts his own persona so much into his movies. THE DOORS is a sentimental favorite even if he did butcher Jim Morrison's legacy. But I'm going to go with HEAVEN AND EARTH because it's so underrated, it expresses a viewpoint that most other filmmakers wouldn't dare to touch, and it's the least tainted by Oliver's ego.
: : : : Spike Lee?
: : : BAMBOOZLED, definitely. The final montage alone is worth its own movie.
: : : : John Carpenter?
: : : Don't follow his work enough to say.
...she's a horribly annoying actress (Godfather, Part III) and she co-wrote that shitty third of NEW YORK STORIES with Daddy Ford Coppola!
Besides that, NY STORIES was great. If a little pointless. But that's a debate I can't be arsed with.
