The Special Editions did a few things for us...
They got Star Wars back in the theaters...
They beefed up the special effects...
They took out the artistic appriciation...
They changed the story...
The SEs look good, but with so many shots changed from the original (namely a lot of modelwork), the original work that went into the groundbreaking film were lost.
As well...A lot of people have a problem with Greedo shooting first in the SE. I personally liked Han's delivery better, before a blast missed him by a mile. It looked bad, and it took away the original feeling of what it's like to be on the run from bounty hunters...ok..nuff geekness there..
Lastly...the originals are what we grew up with. Just because they don't have all the super special effects, it doesn't mean they weren't amazing films.
I know what films I watched for 20 years of my life, and it's sad that they'll prolly never hit DVD.
