So here's my recommendations:

Batman- The book just got a new creative team with issue #608 and it's really good. You can find the issue pretty easily, and it's the begining of a new arc so it's the perfect spot to jump on. Issue #611 comes out in a couple weeks.

The Ultimates- This is part of Marvels ULTIMATE line, where they took classic characters and reintroduced them with new storylines that aren't bogged down by years of continuity so they're great for people getting in to comics. All of the books in the line are some of Marvels best, but The Ultimates (which is pretty much an updated Avengers) is my favorite.

Fantastic Four- I never liked this book before but it got a new writer and artist and their first issue was only 9 cents so I grabbed it. I now buy it every month, it's a really fun read.

Daredevil #41- It just came out this week and it's only 25 cents, it's also really good.

Crimson- This is actually from a few years ago, but you can find it in a four volume collection. It's sort of a vampire coming of age tale and definitely worth checking out.

The Hood- This was a miniseries from a few months ago about this small time crook who stumbles upon this cloak and these boots that give him superpowers and he heads out to become a supervillain. This was a great series and gets a high recommendation from me.

Spider-Man and the Black Cat- A miniseries written by Kevin Smith, it's fantastic. It's going to be four or five issues I believe but only three have been released so far. I haven't had any trouble finding the first three issues at all.

Superman: The 10 Cent Adventure- It came out last week and it costs only 10 cents. It was decent, but for 10 cents it's a bargain.

Captain Marvel- This was relaunched a few months ago and I just got in to this just this week, so far there have been four issues and it's one of the best written books out there.

The best thing to do is go to Marvel current releases
(http://www.marvel.com/comics/onsale) and read over the previews and see what looks interesting. Then go to DC's (http://www.dccomics.com/directcurrents/index.html) and do the same.

Some sites (http://www.popcultureshock.com/comics) give four page previews of some of the weeks books which help a little bit so check those out too.

Best of luck.
