Adobe, Corel, and Macromedia. At least, that's my motto. The best photo manipulation software out there is Adobe Photoshop (the latest version is 7). I usually use a conjunction of Illustrator/Photoshop for typography and photo layout. Corel Draw is an excellent tool for designing certain ads and collages. Macromedia is most of the web design software I use (Fireworks for images, Dreamweaver for site construction, and Flash for animation). And then I love me some Procreate Painter. But that's just for fancy background and graphic tablet workouts.

But you'll never go wrong with Photoshop.
