I emailed awhile back inquiring.
They are canadian, I believe, and at the time Chasing Amy was made, there were two bands out named "Coal" and both had female lead singers. In order for them to copyright the name or whatever, they had their song put into Chasing Amy. But then the band broke up shortly after it was released.
