They train Luke because they are desperate

The Empire has completely wiped out the Jedis. Yoda is the only one left, and he's living in a swamp on Degoba. Luke is the rebellion's last hope, and he also happens to be Darth Vader's son.

: I was just wondering about Ep.1. Yoda says little Anakin is way too old to be trained to be a Jedi. How come in EMPIRE..., he decides to train Luke? The best I can come up with is that they (Yoda and Kenobi) figure they have nothing to lose since Luke is the last person, besides Leia, that can be trained. Any suggestions?
