back in the days of the Republic, when Children were born in the Range of the Republic system they would check for their Midichlorian Count. If it was at a suitable level they would take the child at Birth ( with the parents consent) to be trained as jedi's. anywhere from the age of 3 and above, was to old, as they have gotten attached to their parents and leaving them would cause them great grief at such a young age, witch could turn to dark things, ... thats why it was so dangerous for anakin to be trained,

Ki-Adi-Mundi to Anakin- "Your thoughts dwell on your mother"

so, when Luke came along..

A) there was no on else, he was their only hope. (well, leia was there to, but she wasnt as strong as the son in the force)

B) He had no family left, he had nothing to lose, and neither did yoda...

hope that helps abit

: I was just wondering about Ep.1. Yoda says little Anakin is way too old to be trained to be a Jedi. How come in EMPIRE..., he decides to train Luke? The best I can come up with is that they (Yoda and Kenobi) figure they have nothing to lose since Luke is the last person, besides Leia, that can be trained. Any suggestions?
