But the original release had the 3-hour movie on one dual-layer disc, and all the extras on a second disc.

They *COULD* have crammed the 3:30 minute new cut of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS onto a dual-layer DVD, but that would have resulted in heavy digital video compression. By splitting the movie onto two discs, the video doesn't need to be compressed nearly as much, resulting in better video quality.
