reflecting mean the values which are accepted by society -- ie. the lesbain bar reflects the time (1997) and the location (nyc/new jersey)

challenging means blasting dominant socially accepted values. ie. holdens perception of what a 'normal' relationship is a widespread value -- husband, wife, 2 kids, etc.
