I thought it was him all along as well, until I read an article on this issue in VideoHound's guide to War Films, went and checked the credits like they said, and "bam", they were right. He knows his name because that's all the Jewish guy was screaming before he got jumped, "UPHAM!!! UPHAM!!! UPHAM!!!" The German comes out, sees Upham crying, realizes that's who was being shouted for, also realizes that Upham is not a threat and chooses to let him live. Check the credits. Two different guys. He's not saying "Upham" like he remembers him...watch the scene...he's saying it like a question, like "is your name Upham? Remember me? I just saved your life." Like I said, horrible casting, but great plot twist.
