in the beginning of JSBSB? That's where I worked - nutrition, not nursing. Baby Jay and Baby Bob & their moms were clients. So were lots of immigrants(legal and illegal, I suppose). Some of the Hmong clients I worked with were refugees after their service to the US army in the Vietnam war. Many of them lived in refugee camps - some for TEN years -- Do the math for a second: 8 years old when you enter; 18 years old when you leave, and in between your neighborhood is a barbwire enclosed tent village.
I'm humbled by the resiliency of the people I worked with for 4 years. It's no rant, I swear - I don't hate anybody. I just wish it were clearer that we are all on this damn raft together. And secondly, I'd like us to try and row together, and take turns being coxswain. And if these kids, and THEIR kids get a goddam neighborhood pool, I will kneel beside it and kiss the piss yellow water, because it wouldn't be a bad thing for them to have something nice.
