If you ever have the chance, pick up the continuation of the Willow story. Lucas co-wrote it w/ Chris Claremount, and they're nothing like the original movie, the themes are a lot darker, dire, and the struggle more human imho.
I've read in a few sources that he really wanted to pick up where the story left off, but the prilogy needed to be done.

from what I understand, he undertook the prilogy only at the behest of his children who after the trilogy took on and remain the focus of his energies.
