There are slightly more women than men (nowhere near as many as 10% more, I have no clue where you got that statistic, unless you were referring to 10% more GAY men than gay women). Besides which, it's not numbers that make a "minority". Women are a minority because they don't have the social power or status of men.
I think it breaks down like this:
He's a minority (black) within a minority (gay men) of minority (gay people) -- given that gay men are more socially rejected and have less status than lesbians (that's arguable).
But I agree, I think it was more for the effect.
