I don't think they're for sexually insecure kids, I think they're just for kids who are very lonely, or live out in the country.
Personally I was stuck with a talking Care Bear that skipped, and it's warped me to this day. "Who's your favorite Care Bear? Who's your favorite Care Bear? I'm Secret Bear. You can tell me anything. You can tell me anything." I still hear it in my sleep. Kid Sister would have been more disturbing, but less damaging in the long run.
