AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGMENT...

I think you've got your idioms mixed up.
Selling out is when someone abandons their previous principles for money. I sold out when I ... well, nevermind.

Kevin Smith is extremely popular and has a large audience. His merchandise in fact, is often sold out. Note: sold out -- not selling out.

I think frankly, there is permission given on this board for people to sell their wares in an open and occasionally aggressive fashion.
At no time do I ever recall having read anywhere that Kevin Smith has said he is hoping to appeal to a very select niche group of private comic/movie fans and he tries to write so as to exclude the broader public. No, I think he has been clear that he writes what he wants to see, and he enjoys his own work.
In other words, he is the antithesis of a sell-out.

Now, if Kevin Smith were to show up on your box of Grape Nut Flakes, or if you were to see his cartoons shilling doublemint gum (Jay & Silent Bob in front of the Quik Stop, and Jay says, "Hey beautiful, ever double your pleasure with a couple of gum-popping, cherry stomping, ass-grabbing smooth pimps from Jersey?), then the man would have sold out.

Any questions, or have you moved on to the next person on your list you want to character-assassinate today?
