...it's based on the Minor Threat song "Straight Edge". The X's (One on either hand) comes from that fact that Minor Threat insisted on playing all-ages shows, and the way they conviced the club and venues owners of that was to decise a system of showing who was underage, hence using a marker to write a big, fat X on top of either hand. Straight edge simply means not letting physical temptation dominate your life, namely drugs, sex, and alcohol. You can still drink or smoke a little pot or have some sex and still be "straight edge", just don't let it influence how your life ends up and what kind of situations you get into. For some people it means having NONE of those things...there's no "set" rules, it's just a loose ideology...
