I'm just finishing Mary Pipher's new book about refugees, The Middle of Everywhere.
She writes about a women who lost her home, husband & career after the Taliban came into power in Afganistan and spent months in a refugee camp, where she was raped and became pregnant. Instead of teaching, she works in a dogfood factory in Nebraska now.
She hooked up with other women who have had similar experiences, and her baby is giving meaning to the life of a grandmother who lost her whole family.
How they take care of each other is very moving.

I wonder how it has been for this group of Afgani women since 9/11. Clearly, they are here because they were in opposition to the Taliban.
