: Question for all you film directors.
: I've directed some theatre shows but never a film, and i'm attempting it this summer. Heres the delema, if anyone knows how to relate to an actor how to act "real" hook me up.
Honestly, man, not to nitpick, learn to spell dilemna. It's a hard word phonetically I'll admit but shit, you want to be a director, don't you?
: Or any books that I should check out, because i'm working with experianced theatre actors and I cant seem to find a way to explain to them that they are to theatrical.
First of all, make sure you have method actors, period. If he's supposed to be pissed off, smack him (or her) right in the fucking face and see what they do.
If they're supposed to cry, try berating them off camera.
It's your job to give them the motivation they need to portray the emotional level of the scene, and if they remain too theatrical, tell them to keep their fucking hands down.
It sounds kind of ignorant of me to ask this, but... well anyways if anyone has had to go through with this problem then hit me up with an email.
