Matinee is set in Florida, if I remember right, around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. John Goodman is a huckster filmmaker who shows up with his monster movie,and creates his own protest against it to drum up interest.
It's all played out through these early-teens first date, and all the adult fear of the cold war & communism is transferred to the movie. The girl's beatnik parents are really funny.
The Hidden is the TRUE precursor to Twin Peaks, in my mind. Kyle MacLaughlin (Agent Cooper) plays a federal agent tracking an alien who leaps from dead body to dead body, and beats the hell out of them along the way. The alien has this thing about fast cars and loud music.
