a big part of the compatibility issue was apple's disk format... there are a couple PC utilities out which can read it now... It should have been included at the operating system level by microsoft, but it's available to anybody who needs/wants it (read: everybody).

most actual files are platform independent... if you've got a current version of the program that created it, you can invariably open it.
