As someone who has had a good friend have, then lose a comic shop. There are 2 things that stick out in my mind you NEED to make it work.
1- The most important LOCATION! If you shop is in B.F.E. Nobody is going to come to it-period! No one wants to drive an hour or two every week to buy comics. Make sure you are in a place that gets alot of traffic. Also, make sure there are kids in the area. These are your main life-lines. No kids to spend their allowance, loss of ALOT of sales. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!
2. Variety! You need more than just "comics" now a days to make it work. You need "Magic" cards, and "Figurines" and D & D stuff. You need T-shirts and Japanese DVD's, and "action figures". There is a WIDE variety of people buying "comic REALATED" stuff. Don't forget them! (Magic cards are what kept my friends head above water for the longest time.....)
Remember- Variety is the spice of life!
Oh- I thought of 1 last thing that could help ALOT!
Call your store "Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash"!
That will guarantee customers! (and a law suit......LOL!)
Good Luck Brother!
Peace-
Scott
