ok, here's my take on the whole "Amy" story. Bob says "All i had to show for it was some foolish pride which gave later regret.." after the whole Amy incident. Holden took this to mean "If you try hard enough to *understand*, things will work out." WRONG!!! My take on it is that "You CAN"T change anything. Just accept things for how they are and dont' worry about the past, for it is just that, the PAST." It could be put kinda similar to how Chris Rock said it: "Just be glad you fuckin her now."
Bob knew that, (As VERY few people in this world do) that you can't change anyone, that you should live life for the here and now and say "fuck the past", but Holden just coudlnt' fathom that...until it was too late.
then again, i could be wrong.
