Mr Kevin Smith;

I just recently got registered on the Board (day after I purchased JSBSB), and read your 2001 movie list. I know this is an old subject but...

I was a bit surprised with your take on "Shrek" versus "Monsters, Inc.", though I do have an appreciation of over indulgence of a film due to the desires of munchkins. I enjoyed "Lion King" and "Little Mermaid" the first time I saw them but after what seemed the hundredth showing I was more inclined to measure the amount of tape contained in Disney video rather than have to watch them again.

Back to the point, I noticed you gave "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (JSBSB) GREAT reviews, but were less excited by Shrek, despite striking similarities, namely:

Both start with our main character(s) living quite content with the status quo. Circumstances beyond their control force them into confronting "the establishment" (the internet for JSBSB and Lord Faulkwat in Shrek), and proceed to take a long distance journey to reclaim what is righfully theirs. The pair of individuals consist of a loud mouth, obnoxius individual and a rather strong, rotund, quiet figure. About halfway through the journey they become involved with a woman, but not a love triangle. Both women turn out to be different than they seem and set the stage for romantic problems. Along the way, many guest appearances including such big names as Wes Craven and Robin Hood. The journey continues to ultimate confrontation for which neither groups expected. The end is a major party with many of the cast coming together, and centered around a band which incorporates our heroes.

So, I guess I'm either too consistent or boring. I thought the plot and premise in both JSBSB and Shrek, esp. poking fun at the establishment (Hollywood for JSBSB and Disney in Shrek) made them two of the most enjoyable movies of 2001.

Thanks ITT
