I didn't enjoy Crazy/Beautiful. It was very well-cast -- the two leads carried it well, but the story was pretty cliche, and the ending was somewhat unsatisfying. There wasn't enough of a plot arc, if you know what I mean. Nothing happened.

I don't know that Kevin ignores or doesn't like serious dramas -- didn't he say his favorite movies were JFK, the Last Temptation of Christ, a Man for All Seasons, Do the Right Thing? That's some heavy shit, certainly. I get the feeling, just from what he critiques and what he praises, that he has no patience for character studies. He hated Magnolia. He seems to like his dramas focused on plot and dialogue; it's the way he writes as well. He also seems to disdain epics that don't have deep plot substance.

I go back and forth -- sometimes, I want to be enlightened, I want to spend a couple of hours in deep contemplation. Other times, I just want some belly laughs. I dig "Magnolia" AND "Half-Baked" and if you can't see how that works, well, funk you very much too.

I hope it doesn't take a dark, disturbed personality to delve into the more twisted realms of cinema, or I am REALLY worried about Bryan Johnson.

: Did any of you guys ever watch Crazy / Beautiful?

: I raise the issue because...

: 1) I watched the dvd last night,

: 2) its a style of film / story-telling that's rather different from Kevin's stuff, and

: 3)Though I see Kevin commenting on films ranging from cartoons (like Monsters Inc.) to war/action films (e.g. Black Hawk) - I rarely spot Kevin taking note of the darker and more emotionally charged films around.

: I must say straight away that, though the film stars Kirsten Dunst - it most certainly is NOT one of those teen-movies..... and if it were a teen movie, its a pretty damn fucked up one!!

: Does it require a certain fucked up person with an emotionally trashed history to relate to the darker and heavier side of what cinema is capable of protraying, or can happy light-hearted people such as your goodselves nonetheless delve into fathoms of those pits.

: I find viewaskew films highly enjoyable myself, and I often look towards them from an almost escapist perspective - a mini-universe of discoveries, little escentricities and idiosyncracies.... Kevin often looks into and analyses many of the overlooked and easily accepted notions and concepts in life - but the investigation is often a happy though enlightening one, that rarely delves into the dysfunctional aspects of life.....

: On the other hand, it is possible to view flicks as simply a mode of entertainment - we live in a world of sufficient sickness in reality, that one does not need to wallow in further shit by deliberately choosing to make / create / watch something that pushes those buttons.
