Sure we respected Vader in Empire cause we finally figured out that this guy is one big bad ass. Nobody could fuck with Vader (which initially scared us in Star Wars) and we came to dig that.
But I think the reason some of us eventually grew to like him is that the dark side had never completely taken him over. We knew that and we were hoping on some level in Jedi that the Universe's #1 BAD ASS would come back to the good side.
But really, the primary reason that the good side is better resides in one word:
Yoda
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is that.
