He wrote Dogma first and knew while making Clerks that Dogma was the movie he really wanted too make, but he couldn't make it at the time because the script and the story required too much money, so by making Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy, he was able to get the credibility and financing to make Dogma, I'm pretty sure he was talking to Mewes during Clerk's production, telling him to get ready for Dogma
