I think the direction was to be sizing things up as often as he could. I could be and probably am wrong, but it seems like a good direction: Ryan keeps his life very simple. Not allowing others in easily keeps his world safe. This "control" he has is then destroyed when he kills for the first time. After all his work to keep himself as stable as he could, he goes off the deep end. It seems to make it that much more powerful when you think about how he failed himself after all those years.
