Fuck, what a surprise. If you read the books you should see that 90 percent is setting the ambiance and the character and scenery description and history and 20 percent is story structures. The movie is slow and long, because the books is slow and long. Being paced and extent isn't a bad thing, although in these days of instant gratification one may think so.
