Wasn't the insight that sometimes they do fucked up things for poorly thought out reasons because they're teenagers and because they're female? I don't think we were supposed to 100% understand why she does the things she does, nor 100% sympathize, but were supposed to watch and let our feelings modify as we got to know her. I didn't like it all that much the first time I saw it, and admittedly, the second time were more naturally pleasing circumstances, but I still worked a lot better for me.
