I didn't see the commercials in question, but now really wish I had. You are most likely correct in the assertion that had 9/11 not happened, the commercials would not have aired, thus the probable reason the masses feel that domestic terrorism was not the government's implied target of the ads.

I also agree that voting works, but think myself realistic enough to know that it only works to reasonable degree. The last presidential election was a prime example of the "masses" making clear their voice (in the popular vote), but getting someone altogether different. I do not agree though that some president's will do whatever the masses want him (or her, if there ever is one) to. This is clear in W's insistance on having far right leaning Christian conservatives in his cabinet. Take Ashcroft as an example. If I recall correctly, the masses were fairly vociferous about their displeasure in having a pro-gun, anti-gay, anti-black, anti-abortion extremist as the "top-cop" of this country, but Bush insisted, and we had to deal with it...

But, that's just my opinion.....
