Ok, here I am, a Kevin Smith fan, proud owner of 2 dvds, one being
Chasing Amy defending a guy's write to bitch about Dogma (one of
my many videos) not being that good. You may find that his/her post
seemed like one that would come from a person who doesn't check
up on the internet regularly and thus wouldn't know that Kevin Smith
has decided that the Jersey Trilogy would be the second five part
trilogy in existance and by the title of his latest script being Jersey
Girl, might think that Jay and Bob may show up. Well, in case you
haven't been aware, not only is Mallrats an acquired taste, Kevin
Smith is an acquired taste. I've actually had a friend who refused to
watch any more of Chasing Amy than the 40 minute mark, which
means he missed most of the good parts. I also have a cousin who
refuses to watch Clerks. In fact, probably the most well known single
film of his would be Mallrats (next to Dogma) since quite a few
people find it to be their fav film.
Also, I know some people who really don't like Dogma. They found it
boring and predictable, quote "meet a new character, hear them bitch
about their past, ten minutes later meet a new character." The guy
had a point. As far as action movies go, it wasn't that good and as far
as comedies go, it wasn't that good either. It ain't pretty but it's the
truth.
As for Mr. Blonde's comments about Dolomite having too much time
on his hands for someone who isn't a fan since he posted
something less than kissing Kevin's ass, he also more or less
admitted to watching all 5 of his flicks, which would be more time
than the majority of the American public was willing to do. As for the
B-Movie comments, take it like a man and admit it to yourselves,
folks, Episode 1, an A-movie, made more money while I was taking a
shit than Dogma made over the it's entire time in theaters. I'm
speaking figuratively, of course and if any of you guys start bringing
numbers into that equation, could you just accept that while Kev
pokes fun at pop-culture regularly, it doesn't seem to be working both
ways.
I wouldn't say I stop by daily or even weekly sometimes, but I try to
visit the site and I can remember someone saying at one point,
maybe it was Affleck in an interview, but instead of quoting I'm just
going to say it. A Kevin Smith film, while it responds strongly with a
small percentage of the public (but a larger percentage of those who
have seen it) has everything that makes up a B-Movie, including less
of a budget which frees up what he can do with it. Kev constantly
stated that with Chasing Amy, because they had no budget, there
wasn't a lot of pressure for the film to be a commercial success.
Orson Welles said pretty much the same thing about his 100%
creative control on Citizen Kane.
If Kevin Smith were to make an A-list movie with an A-list cast (which
he pretty much has, minus them being mega famous. Affleck and
Damon are getting up there, but are still needing a big box office hit to
be up there with a Pacino or an Arnold) it would be insane and I
might question if he could pull it off. Who wouldn't question it when
he known to make movies revolving around a couple convenience
store clerks? I'm not saying he couldn't pull it off, but it definitely
would be a stretch from those roots to doing serious drama or action.
I admit to reading his draft of Superman from once upon a time, and
while there was obviously a lot of pressure from the producers and
also a lot of the plot that had already been thought up, it seemed to
be pretty...well, to put it bluntly, lacking in any real conflict that keeps
the movie going and seems more like a bunch of shit that happens
rather than life or death situations that I should care about. Props out
for the stuff between Clark and Lois, it's very very good dialogue that's
dead on, but the other 3 quarters of the script seemed to lag on a bit,
giving more background info on stuff I shouldn't have to know and
doesn't really matter (blocking out the sun? Granted, the source of
Superman's power, but you'd think Kryptonite would be in ample
supply for a computer that was on Krypon when it blew up)
Anyhoo, I should of ended this long assed post an hour ago, but here
you go. I'm done taking my shit. As for the whole thing with Dolomite,
if he ever shows up again (not too likely) or if anyone else posts
something similar (they probably have in the time it took me to write
this) remember that whole free speech thing and play nice. Believe
me, it IS possible to read something or listen to someone, disagree
with it and not have to force the other person to join your side of the
argument. Well, now that I've ranted on for a good hour and a half
here after being on this site a total of 5 minutes beforehand, I'm
going to go give Ed the Sock a big rant about his Fromage 2001 bit
instead of sleeping, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
