Lucas had the idea after hearing his daughters(?) rave about 'em, and I think they were nearby too but I could be wrong about that.

I heard they shot the scene(s) they were supposed to be in (though it was in the background of the jedi knights battle scene), but might be cut 'cause of all the crap everyone's giving Lucas about having them in the film in the first place.
