Man, Sopranos is without question for me the best thing to happen in
Film/TV/Entertainment the past three years - and the DVD sets give me a hard-on
just thinking of them. I haven't had a chance to touch the commentaries on the
second season yet, but I can't wait.
I've spent the last three days going through the 26 hours of those two seasons
and I've enjoyed something this much only a few times (last times were Memento
and Monsters Inc. - man I can't imagine what Pixar might come up with after
their Disney contract ends) - but the obvious conscious effort that goes into it
make it so much more for me than anything else going on.
But the best part is that for three months of the year, every week there's
another hour to just sit back and revel in. And the fact that it's episodic means
these characters have sufficient time to grow/evolve in, as Christopher (my
absolute favorite character) would say, their "arcs." I think Kevin's films have sort
of functioned like this, instead, in the realm of "dick and fart jokes" - I mean, Jay
has grown from Clerks to J&SBSB - but I wonder whether it's so as to function as
a leading character as he carries J&SBSB or as a reflection of Mewes's greater
abilities as an actor... Or was Jay needed to tie together the Askewniverse?
I can't wait for Tenenbaums to play near me...just watched Bottle Rocket and
Rushmore again...
