Coal to Newcastle

Hi, I just watched the Dogma Special Edition commentary, and hailing from Newcastle it intrigued me when Kevin used the above phrase.
I had always assumed "like bringing coals to Newcastle" was just used in England.
Do you guys on the other side of the pond know of this phrase? Or is it just something Kevin picked up on his travels?
